Happenings in the Fandom

Change

As I am absolutely positive all of you know already, Warner brothers saw fit to surprise us all yesterday with the release of a brand new trailer. Sadly I must confess that I didn’t get a chance to watch it until early today but never the less I have already formed my opinion of this latest release.  After I watched the trailer I listened to the latest mugglecast which focused solely on the new video. There seemed to be a consensus that the trailer was much darker and more somber then any of its previously released fellows, I agree with this, there is a complete lack of any humor which is so prevalent in trailers 2 and 3. Missing are the quick one liners and scenes depicting the golden trio. Instead Tom Riddle is once again in the forefront, leading audiences through a look at the sinister world in which he has been attempting to create since he was a young child. The cinematography is very heavy on the grays and blues, except for the punctuating flashes of bright orange fire in the Borrow scene and the Cave scene.

Although this trailer did not release that much new footage, there are certain things that the fandom now knows regarding the upcoming movie. First is that Luna Lovegood finds Harry after he has been put into the full body bind by Malfoy on the Hogwarts Express. At time code     we see the view through Luna’s specto specs as she comes across Harry. This scene raises several issues for me personally, first there is the initial though about the lack of Tonks, but that I can overlook for the most part, then however, there is the part that Luna’s glasses can see through Harry’s invisibility cloak, the impermeable Deathly Hallow cloak! Okay Okay, so Mad-eye Moody’s eye could see through it too, but Specto specs? Really?

Another topic that I wanted to touch upon briefly was that of the casting of Michelle Fairley as Mrs. Granger for the seventh Movies. Hold on… I’m confused… I thought that Hermione put a memory charm on her parents and sent them off to Australia in the seventh book. So the one time that J.K. Rowling actually feeds the screenplay writers a quick fix to dealing with unimportant characters is the one time that they don’t take the bait and change things anyway. I can understand having to rewrite parts of the story in order to make a movie but really this is just sacrilege!  Now I could be completely wrong and the writers are not changing anything but I am just saying that there comes a point when the canon should be revered not exploited without thought to the consequences.
